Going to Pops

Friday afternoon we took off to my parents house to spend the rest of the weekend. They are redoing their kitchen, and my dad had installed part of the cabinets. It looks really, really good! We visited Ken's Pizza for my favorite Pepperoni & Mushroom Thin Crust pizza with Alpine Dressing on the side. Then we went to the new Super Wal-Mart that opened there in March. I did not feel like I was in Chandler any longer when I walked in! It was nuts!

Saturday, we made plans to go to Okla City so I could visit a store called Gordman's that my mom loves, loves, loves! It was a really cool store, and if I had lots of spare money, I would have brought home tons of my favorite country and americana decor! We stopped by Mimi's Cafe for a late lunch/brunch and then headed to a couple of other stores before heading back home.

My dad decided to bypass the Turnpike and take Route 66 home from the city. He kept trying to describe this new restaurant/tourist spot in Arcadia called Pops. Nothing prepared us for the real thing, though! It is essentially a gas station, convenient store and restaurant (think Target snack bar) with a pop bottle theme that is a huge tourist trap. They have thousands of pop bottles all over the store and had some interesting flavors that you could buy: Route 66 Root Beer, Round Barn Root Beer, Outlaw Orange Creme, Route 66 Black Cherry and Jack Black's Orange Stash to name a few. We were very surprised by the number of people crammed into this little space...it was very amusing to me!

Sunday, we headed back home and picked Chloe up from her vacation. Now, we just have to get back into the routine of things before school starts up in two weeks!

Tubin' Sumo Style

The plan for Friday morning was to take the boat out on the lake and do some swimming and tubin'. The kids had a blast and Bill & Steve loved trying out their latest toy.....the Sumo Tube (my camera ran out of battery juice before I could get Uncle Steve captured in the tube...bummer)!

I do want to give a huge thank you to Steve and Keri for opening their home to us! We had an awesome time and can't wait to do it again! Thanks!!!

Of course, I took tons of pictures and video of little baby Gavin. He was 5 weeks old when we went to visit and such a cutie!! Grace and Gunter (big sis and bro) have adjusted pretty well it seems, and their little dog, Charlie has become quite the protector! So, enjoy this video from SHE productions!

On the Road Again....Oklahoma Here We Come!!

For those who remember our Lousiana posts, I mentioned that my brother & sister-in-law, Steve & Keri, had a baby boy named Gavin on July 1st as we were driving home. They live in Missouri, so obviously we had yet to see the baby. We decided we needed to set aside a couple of days to drive up there and hang out, meet the baby, etc. They were so excited to have us come and invited us to meet them at their lake house in Oklahoma. Who could pass that up?

You know how I am with plans, and of course this time was no exception....all of our plans were changed many, many times! LOL! Getting ready just seemed to take so long this time around. Just getting out of the house was a chore, and we started out 3 hours behind schedule! ugh! But we got the puppy to her vacation spot, the cat settled in the house (she stayed home this time), the stuff all loaded into Leo, and we were off....finally.....well, after a stop at Aunt Annette's apartment for some things that the girls had left behind the weekend before! ;o)

The drive actually wasn't so bad, and the girls were excited that we had to drive through Checotah, Oklahoma (Carrie Underwood fans know what I mean).....okay, so I was the main one who was excited! LOL! No star sightings, but we did play her song "I Ain't in Checotah" when we left...we are major cheese-balls!

We made it to the lake around 4 hours later than we intended, and finally got to hold that sweet, sweet baby....aw (more pics and movie coming up next)!!

That evening, Grace and our girls swam in the lake and had a blast. When Gunter finally arrived home from football practice, the kids (and the big kids) roasted marshmallows and made 'smores. YUM! Then they settled into bed to watch Nim's Island, while the grownups watched 21. It didn't take long until everyone was conked out for the night....even little Gavin managed to sleep 7 straight hours for the first time!

Our Louisiana Vacation - The Movie

Yes, we took tons more pictures than what was in the posts, so I thought I would make one of my "world-famous movies" to show them all off. So, here ya go, another SHE Production.....

Maggie's 1st Vacation

Maggie insists that she be able to tell you all about this trip in her own words. She has asked that I translate so that us humans can try to comprehend her language....LOL!

I am sitting in my dining room watching my mom pack suitcases. I wonder where she takes them, and why won't she ever take me, too? I will just sit here on top of the biggest one, maybe she won't notice.

My dad took that huge, black creature out of the house this morning. Perhaps it will be gone for good this time....the worst day of my life them bringing that beast into my home! Now it seems all of my humans along with their stuff are getting in the big, white machine. Well, except for my mom, who just shut the front door in my face. I really want to go with her this time, so how to get her attention....aw, yes, the bite mom on the leg trick. Works every time! Much better, she is carrying me through the house into the garage....wait, maybe I better rethink this plan. Do I really want to get inside that big, white machine? Nope, don't think so. Oh, bugger, I am in!

Now this machine is moving.....pretty quickly....yep, I am done. Thanks for the ride, you can let me out any time. Oooooh, that spot with the green, green grass looks great, just stop here and let me out. Seriously, aw, c'mon you passed it! Good help is sure hard to find. Oh, well, I guess I will just take a tour of this machine. Maybe it isn't all bad. At least all of my humans are here. Yawn, maybe a catnap is in order. Hey, this is a great spot in the floor, very relaxing, I'll just take little snooze right here.

Hey, what is going on now? Why are you rolling down your window? OMG, there is a person, please, don't give me to that person....it would be really bad for you if you try to hand me through your window to that person. I'm outta here! Whew, that disaster was averted....what's that I smell? Chicken? Oooh, I love chicken, but those humans never share their chicken with me. Oh, well, back to napping.

Okay, now what?!? Everytime I get good and comfy, we stop this machine. Oh, great a building, a door, a room. Yep, I am gonna hide. This place is nuts, and so not my house! My humans have left, I should probably investigate while they are gone. On second thought I have a really great hiding place, they'll never find me here. Oh, they are back and calling my name. Yep, I am not moving, they will never find me! Wait, what if they might have a treat for me....yep, there is my mom talking about treat, treats. I better see what is going on. Just let me peek my head out this little hole in the box springs, oh, I see her and the treat. Unfortunately, it was easier squeezing into this hole, than getting out. There's dad, too, oh, thank goodness he made the hole bigger, now I can get to my treat....awwwww bliss!

Well, I have spent a couple of days checking this place out, and it isn't so bad after all. There is a tall cabinet I can sit on to see all of my humans. There is a sink where I can beg to play in the water. There is a bathroom, just like at home where I can follow my mom. My laptop is here, so I can get warm. Yep, all the luxuries of home, except no tweet, tweets that I can see. There sure is a lot of banging going on around here. But I have my hiding place all staked out if some unsavory character tries to come inside this room! Yep, I am starting to think of this as my new home. It's not so bad really. If only they would take me outside for some of that yummy green grass I saw on the way, then I would be set!

Are you kidding me??? The suitcases again?!? What is up with you humans and these suitcases?!? Just don't even think about taking me with you this time. I love this room. I never want to leave this room. No, seriously.....oh, bugger it, I am back in the big, white machine. Maybe this time I can find a way out. Nope, just as secure as last time. Well, there is nothing that can be done about it. I'll just take a catnap.

Not now, mom, I am sleeping. No, leave me, don't take me out of here. I like it here......oh, wait, I see, it can't be, is it really.....my house, my kitchen floor.....aw, bliss! Thank you, thank you....I will never ask to go outside ever again!

Day 6 - On the Road Again

Tuesday, found us driving back home. Again Maggie freaked out....oops, that's all I better say about that! The car ride was good....again the girls made it through without the dvd player...yay, girls! And we found a shortcut that took an hour off our drive! Woohoo!

We did receive some GREAT news around noon that day....Bill's mom called to let us know that his brother Steve and his wife Keri had their baby boy, Gavin at 11:11 that morning! We were so excited for them!! We can't wait to make it up to Missouri to see them all! Congratulations!!!!

Day 5 - Gardening and Blue Dogs

Monday found Bill back at work. Unfortunately, it also meant us girls getting up early and driving him to work - 1 1/2 hours roundtrip. When we got back to the hotel, we decided to take one last dip in the pool. It was deserted when we got there, so that was nice. After about 1/2 an hour we headed outside to the sun deck to dry off. Then back to our room to get dressed and head back to Rip Van Winkle Gardens!!

We arrived at the gardens at 11, met the resident Great Dane Puppy named Peanut, paid the admission fees and headed to the cafe for lunch. I loved this cafe!! We got to sit on the sun porch and had an awesome view of Lake Peigneur! The food was good, too, so that was a bonus!! The trek through the gardens wasn't much to brag about. We saw some pretty plants in the beginning, a couple of fountains, Japanese Tea House. I was more concerned about getting to the Mansion for our tour!! I love touring old houses!

We made it to the house a little early for the tour, so we took advantage of the huge front porch with rockers and took a rest.....it was so hot and humid! Peanut paid a visit to us while we were waiting, which the girls thought was awesome!! The house was beautiful. They didn't allow pictures or video, though, so you will have to take my word for it....or go visit it yourself. We weren't allowed to go upstairs, either, which was pretty disappointing to me, but we did see 10 rooms including the kitchen that still had the original cast iron stove in it!

While touring the house, Bill called and was ready to be picked up from work. So, we quickly walked the rest of the gardens then headed back out to Krotz Springs to pick him up....whew, I felt like I had been driving for ages!

On the advice of my friend, Joni, we headed to the Blue Dog Cafe for dinner! I soooooo wish we had went here our first night.....I would have eaten here every night of our vacation....it was AWESOME!!!!! Definitely the best meal of our entire trip!! Although, Bill thought the Roasted Duck Quesadilla was too woodsy for his tastes. After dinner, it was back to the hotel so I could start packing....boo-hoo!

Day 4 - Errands, Peppers & Cruisin'

Sunday, Bill actually got the day off!! YAY! After hearing about our adventures at the Tabasco Factory, he was JEALOUS! We decided that we would just take a scenic drive down south, and if we ended up at the Tabasco Factory, then so be it! LOL!! Before we could leave town, however, we had to run a couple of errands.....Best Buy for a new laptop charger (Bill's broke) and T-Mobile to order a replacement cell phone (my new one broke).

Our first stop on our scenic drive was to New Iberia to visit the Shadows on the Teche Plantation. Unfortunately, the cost to tour the plantation was too steep for us.....and, okay, I was hungry.....so, we visited the gift shop for some souvenirs and then headed on to lunch.

Then because we were actually so close, I drove us back to Avery Island. Bill loved the Tabasco tour!! At the country store, He and Em tried out the Tabasco Ice Cream....a little weird they thought. Bill, Em and Hayley also tried a fresh batch of Tabasco Chili which they loved!! We had to buy a bottle of it to make at home!!

Where to next? Sydney had found a place called Jefferson Island in one of our many brochures, and really wanted to go there. We had no idea what there was to do, but hey we were just out cruisin', right? Jefferson Island is another one of the salt formed islands in southern Louisiana. It was named after Joseph Jefferson who was an actor, artist and author back in the 1800s. When we arrived there, we found a place called Rip Van Winkle Gardens that was beautiful gardens, bed & breakfast, cafe and mansion!!! Unfortunately, we arrived too late to begin a tour of it all, so I promised Sydney we would go back the next day. The girls picked up a couple of souvenirs in the gift shop, then we headed back to the hotel where I discovered my email was broken and we had dinner and more arcade fun.

Day 3 - It's Gettin' Hot in Here.....Is that a Gator??

Saturday, Bill was able to get a ride to work, so we had the car to ourselves all day....YAY!! So, what to do....I really wanted to head down to the southern coast, so we checked all of our brochures and found a place called Avery Island. It is an island made out of salt and is also home to Tabasco sauce!!! So, regardless of the threat of rain, the girls and I headed down south to Avery Island. There was a $1 toll in order to enter the island. We pulled up to the toll booth, and it was on the wrong side of the car! Luckily, there was a car in front of us that had to pay first, so I got to see how this Cajun man clipped a map and toll ticket onto a long stick with a clothespin and stick it in their window! When I got up there, all I had was a $10 bill, so he had to give me change back. He didn't have enough cash change, so when he gave me a dollar in coins, there was a nifty hole on the platform of his stick that held change. It was AWESOME!!!

We paid the $1 toll to enter the island and made our first stop at the Tabasco Factory. They actually give a free tour which takes no more than 30 minutes total. They tell you the history of Tabasco, who created it (Edward McIlhenny), how it got its name (Tabasco means land of the hot and humid), how it is manufactured (long story and many years). Then there is a video where you can watch the whole process. The third part involves walking past a glass wall where you can watch the factory workers. Unfortunately for us, they only work Mon-Thu, so we didn't get to see anyone. The last part is several stations where you can learn more about the process and the McIlhenny family.

I was really looking forward to visiting the Tabasco Country Store....you know me! ;o) It was cool to see all of the products they have with Tabasco on it....dog collars, pajama pants, computer mouse, etc.....You could also sample different Tabasco products.....ice cream, soda, salsa, sauce varities, etc. We didn't do that part, though....not that crazy!! LOL!!

The next section of Avery Island they let you visit is called Jungle Gardens. It is a beautiful drive-thru garden park where you can see actual alligators (we saw several babies), frogs, turtles, egrets and other creatures. The trees were magnificient....covered in spanish moss. During the drive, you can park in different areas and walk around. There was a beautiful Buddha Temple and a place called Bird City where you could see many, many egrets. It was a really neat place to visit. It even rained on us a bit, but we didn't care. It was nice to just be out in the nice air....well, if you don't mind smelling the swamp air a little!

We headed back to the hotel after that....we were tired and hungry. Bill got home in time for dinner that night, so back to the hotel dining room. The girls had to check out the arcade again....then back to our room for bed.

Day 2 - Let's Hang Out, Go for a Drive & Prejeans

On Friday, Bill had to actually go into the refinery to work. I let him take the rental car until he could make sure that there would be someone working there to give him a ride back to Lafayette. So, that meant the girls and I were stranded at the hotel. No biggie, we stay home a lot when we are at home, right?

Because of the threat of rain for the afternoon, our first stop after breakfast was the playgrounds....yes I said playgound-s. There was a small one near our room, and we started there first. It was neat to see them actually get to play on a teeter totter and monkey bars!!! I took tons of pictures.....some just too precious for words! After a few minutes, we headed off to the bigger playground at the back of the property. Again, lots and lots and lots of precious pictures were taken. After we got all hot and tired and decided to head back in and cool off, I decided that I wanted a picture with me and the girls. Being the only souls out there that morning, I couldn't ask someone to take our picture. No, biggie, my camera has the self-timer function....so what if I have never used it before....how hard can it be? Isn't this a very precious picture???

Yeah, and it is the only one I have from that morning as I somehow deleted the others while trying to use the self-timer! No kidding!!!!!! ugh!!! But it is so precious, right?!? ;o)

After cooling off, we headed for a dip in the indoor pool. We were the only souls there, too.....very nice!!!! We stayed for about 1 1/2 hours, then headed back to our room to change for lunch. Still stranded at the hotel, we tried out the hotel for lunch, and it was better than our dinner the night before. Thank goodness! LOL!!! After lunch we headed back to our room to play our wii....we thought. Turns out you can't really hook up video games to those pretend video/audio jacks on the front of a hotel tv....bugger it!

I emailed Bill and asked if he could come back and have dinner with us. They were just about to get heavy into their work, so he came to the hotel and we drove him straight back to work....this way we had transportation and not be stuck at the hotel. The girls and I decided to try an actual seafood restaurant for dinner. The hotel recommended one called Prejean's. I admit the atmosphere was great.....red/white checkered tablecloths, cool 3D mural on the wall, country-ish, fish tank with turtles in it, etc. The food.....well, not so great. As you all know, Emyley had fried crawfish, which she says tastes like chicken. Syd and Hayley had the popcorn shrimp, and they liked it at first, but not so much as they kept eating. I tried a Lemon Mesquite-Grilled Snapper that came with a sauce covered rice dish. I am not a fishy fish eater, so the Snapper wasn't that great to me, and the rice was not completely cooked. They did have AWESOME Sweet Tea, though! LOL! I wouldn't really recommend this place, unless you know your seafood and what to order.

After we left the restaurant, there was a beautiful rainbow outside. Sydney managed to get this picture of the restaurant with the rainbow in the background! Very pretty!

From there, we headed back to the hotel where Em promptly pulled her first tooth and then on to the arcade. Didn't take long for us to run out of change, so off to bed we went.

Day 1 - The Car, The Cat & The Holidome

Since Bill's company was picking up our transportation tab, he decided that a rental car would be the best bet for us to travel in. So, he arranged a rental car with Hertz here in McKinney. Unfortunately, no SUVs available.....I was really hoping to try out the Nissan Murano. But, anyway, we get there Thursday morning after dropping Chloe off for her vacation, and pick up our very own Cop Car!!!! No kidding, it was a white Crown Victoria! To give the car some credit, it did have very nice leather seats, a big trunk for all of our junk and a.......wait for it.........GPS!

This was Maggie's first long car ride. She's been to the school and Mickey D's with me before, but never 8 hours in a car! She was not too happy, but she wants to tell her story when she is ready, so no details!

The girls did really well on the long car ride. We even managed to not miss the dvd player from my truck!! They read, listened to their own music, played the alphabet game and drew lots of pictures. Em was the only one to take a nap. It rained a little on us along the way, but with a forecast of rain for our entire vacation, it didn't really bother us too much.

We stayed at the Holidome in Lafayette. It was really nice and had just been redecorated. The girls (and I) were mostly excited about the indoor pool and whirlpool. Okay, I was also excited about the restaurant and the fact that the girls could eat free!!

Because we were wore out from the long car ride.....why does riding in a car all day make you so super tired??.....we decided to try the hotel restaurant for dinner. It was pretty overpriced as is normal for hotels and the food not so great.....again pretty normal.

After dinner we headed to the pool. We stayed only about 30 minutes, though, as it was apparent the evening time brought out older kids and vocabulary not meant for little children! After showers and a little tv, we all headed to bed.

Fly-By-The-Seat-Of-Your-Pants!

On Monday of last week Bill learned that he would be travelling to Louisiana for 5 days to do some work at the refinery they are acquiring. No big deal, I am used to him being gone. I told him to have fun. LOL! He surprised me by asking if we wanted to come along. Didn't take long for me to say yes.

On Tuesday, he finds out that he will be staying 6 days! So, arrangements were made for Chloe to have a "puppy vacation" and Maggie to travel with us! Yep, you read that right!

On Wednesday, the girls and I piddle around all day instead of packing like we should, shop at Target to get the last minute travel items (especially a travel size cat litter box) and stop by the library to pick up some last minute reads.

On Thursday, we all piled in the rental car and headed down to Lafayette, Louisiana. So, settle in to read about our impromptu, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants vacation.......

Disney Scrapbook

I promised to show you all pictures of our Disney Scrapbook that we ordered from Disney's Photopass, and I got sidetracked. And now that I am learning to make videos, I decided that a video was definitely in order here! ;o) Overall, we were very pleased with the quality of the scrapbook, and my only complaint would be that I wish there were more background choices. It is an awesome keepsake, and well worth all the effort it took to create it! Enjoy the movie!

Okay, I know everyone thought that the Disney posting was over, but I do have a couple more blogs left to do. This blog is to show you the family pictures that we had taken at Disney. The Cinderella picture was included in our lunch at the castle, and the picture in front of the castle was our last ditch attempt to use photopass! Enjoy!

Mousekeeping and Turn-Down Service

I have to admit that prior to this trip, I had never thought to tip the housekeeping staff at our hotel. Once I started reading about Disney, I learned this is a must! So, we printed off our envelopes (one for each day), stuffed them with money and left a new envelope each day! It is important that you leave the money each day, and not just one tip at the end of your stay since it is most likely that you will have more than one mousekeeper throughout your stay! We never had any complaints with our Mousekeeper. Our room was always clean and shiny when we went back for our afternoon rest breaks, and then there was that adorable towel doll that was left!

We weren't sure if we would get the turn-down service or not. I had read conflicting statements about this resort. Just in case, we made up separate tipping envelopes for this purpose, and we left them on the bed before we went out after our afternoon break. Well, sure enough, every night (except our last because we put out the do not disturb - remember our homebody night?), we had turn down service! The girls were also sure to bring 2 stuffed animals from home (Emyley snuck in an extra & we acquired 3 new ones, of course!) so that the Mousekeeper could "arrange" them for us! It was so much fun, almost like Christmas morning, wondering what our animals would be up to!! Oh, and we still have some of the chocolates left over that they put on our beds! I won't let anyone touch them!!! LOL!

Time to go home....for real. :o(

Well, the day came that we had to head back home. We did get to have lots of fun our last day, as you all saw from my latest blogs!

One incredible thing about the Disney Magical Express service that I absolutely loved, was the ability to check in for our flight and check in our bags right at our hotel! They have a stand set up, they tag your luggage, and give you your boarding passes! We were all set to go in less than 15 minutes!! We were able to check in for our flight before even leaving for Magic Kingdom that morning! Once we got to Orlando Airport, we just went straight to security....no long lines! I loved it!! After a vacation of crowds and lines, this perk was fabulous!

Before our Magical Express bus came to take us to the airport, we took a few pictures around our resort, and then later at the airport (where our late flight was 30 minutes late!). Again, another slide show for your enjoyment!

How could I forget????

On our last morning, we were catching the monorail to Magic Kingdom, and we finally saw a monorail with an empty front car! So, Bill asked if we could ride up front and they said yes!!! I think I was more excited than the others as this was something I had read was very important to try to do! Well, unfortunately, only 4 people could ride up front, so I let Bill take the girls. The pilot joked that he better not see me running away from the monorail shouting, "I'm Free!!!!". LOL!! After we got to the Magic Kingdom, the pilot gave the girls a co-pilot license!

Day 5 - Time to go home.....

Hey, wait, not, yet!!! We still have all day to play since we don't leave our resort until 5:00!!! Yippee!!

So, since we had all day, we headed back to Magic Kingdom. There were a couple of things we didn't get to do the first go around, so they were top on our list. First, we headed to Dumbo. There was a small line, and before long we were flying away! Next up was Ariel's Grotto! Funny thing, we had got in line for this our first night, but the line was not moving at all, so we got out of line. Well, when we got in line this time, we were in the exact same spot!! So we said that in 3 days, the line had not moved at all!!! LOL! Then, of course, once we finally get to the front of the line, like 30 minutes later, and were the next to see Ariel, she had to take a break! Figures! But, we got to see her, and Emyley was so excited! She wore her Ariel shirt and the Ariel necklace she bought! And Ariel interacted really well with the girls! It was so sweet!

We rode a few rides again in Fantasyland, including Dumbo which had no line, and then we got on the Liberty Square Riverboat. I grabbed the last seat and just rested my feet the whole ride. I love riverboats, they are so relaxing! The girls, of course, wanted to go up and down every flight of stairs. Luckily, Bill was up for it! LOL!

Next, we headed to lunch at Pecos Bill's Cafe. It was barely 11:00, and already it was crowded! That was the only downfall about eating this whole trip....it was packed no matter where we went! The food was good, though and we hung out in the air conditioning for a bit. Next stop, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad....what, broke down, again?!?! We decided to get fast passes, but I figured we wouldn't make it back over there again, and I was right. Boo-hoo. It is the only roller coaster that I like to ride, so I was pretty bummed. The girls didn't care, they just wanted to hop on Splash Mountain and get soaked. But, I couldn't handle us being gross all day with no way to change before we went home, so we didn't get to do that, either.

We decided to just head over to Tomorrowland. The girls wanted to do Buzz Lightyear again, and of course the Transit Authority! We like to live on the edge! LOL!! We managed to slip right in to Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor, which was a pretty cute show that interacted with the audience. After a little browsing in one of the gift shops over there, we headed to Buzz and walked right on! Next we split up since Hayley wanted to go on the Carousel of Progress again and Bill wanted to do Stitch's Great Escape. Em went with Bill and I had Hayley and Syd. We met up right outside the entrace to the Transit Authority, so we hopped on. While we were on it, we saw Stitch doing autographs and pictures!! We hurried over, and the girls got to meet him. Bill asked for a picture with him, and Stitch gave him a big hug!! It was sooo funny!!

It was pretty much time to head to Main Street, so we could do our little bit of shopping. We stopped off in Casey's Corner to use up the rest of our dining credits and to rest up. Casey's Corner is at the end of the Main Stree Emporium which is full of shops. It runs continuously from one corner of main street to the other, which was great since everyone was lining up for the parade outside on Main Street. Bill started getting a headache, so I quickly ran through the shops to grab a couple things. And then we left the park. :o(
